Spring is here, and with all the spoken word, hip hop, and multicultural arts programs coming up, were just getting warmed up. Start the new season in style and check out the events listed below. And if you haven’t done so already, head over to the Wisconsin State Journals HIP HOP 101 multimedia website, which highlights Madison’s many talented artists in the culture, including several Youth Speaks Wisconsin artists and affiliates. Recognize anyone? If not, then you definitely need to hit up these sessions

1. LINE BREAKS continues: March 26, April 9, April 16
Were more than half way through the LINE BREAKS Performance and Lecture Series on Spoken Word and Hip-Hop Theater with Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Friends. Every Monday night weve got 300 people college students, professors, parents, middle and high schoolers packing the theater participating in this ongoing dialogue on the aesthetics, politics, and pedagogy of hip hop culture. Its powerful. There are only 3 more weeks left, so come early to get a good seat! And for a sneak preview of this weeks guest artist, check out Mayda del Valle on HBOs Def Poetry Jam this Friday night at 11:00 pm.

2. Hip Hop as a Movement Week: April 13-21
The annual Hip Hop as Movement conference is back, and this year its so big, we had to turn it into a week of events. A coalition of student, campus, and community organizations has created a week full of performances, poetry slams, battles, workshops, panels and much more. From Afrika Bambaataa to The Coup, you know how we do.

3.OMAR SOSA Plays First Wave Benefit Concert: April 26
With more than 12 amazing student artists already accepted into the First Wave Spoken Word & Urban Arts Learning Community here at UW-Madison, now its time to raise some scholarships to help these emerging leaders attend the university and be a part of the country’s first integrated hip hop arts college program. On April 26, Latin Jazz virtuoso Omar Sosa will play a benefit concert for First Wave scholarships. Enjoy one of the worlds top pianists and support these diverse young leaders and artists at this incredible show, which will also feature performances by First Wave students.

Missed UW Artist in Residence Marc Bamuthi Josephs opening showcase last month because of the blizzard? Saw the show and want to see more of his one-of-a-kind Hip Hop Theater works? Check out this just-scheduled performance, which will be Bamuthi’s send-off show as he finishes up his residency. Also performing will be UW-Madison students from Bamuthi’s class, which includes some of the campus top poets, MCs, and dancers, and the Youth Speaks Wisconsin national slam team.
